Rail and tram changes, plus local summer plans

Beckenham Junction rail line closes on Sunday 2 August

No trains will run between Victoria and Shortlands via Beckenham Junction on Sunday 2 August. Beckenham Junction, Penge East, Kent House and several other stations on the route will be closed all day. Victoria to Orpington trains will divert via Denmark Hill, while accessible replacement buses run between Denmark Hill and Bromley South, except Brixton. Allow extra time and check the National Rail travel notice.

August tram works affect both local branches

Track works will change tram services from Thursday 6 to Sunday 30 August. No trams will serve Elmers End; TfL suggests using Birkbeck or bus 289 between Arena and Elmers End. Beckenham Junction trams will run only between Beckenham Junction and East Croydon, with the town-centre loop and West Croydon stops closed. See the full service plan.

Six-book summer challenge begins at the library

Children aged 4 to 11 can join this year’s free Summer Reading Challenge at Beckenham Library. Read six library books by Saturday 5 September, collecting stickers along the way, to earn a certificate and medal. Ask at the library or see the challenge details.

Tell the council what local parks need

Bromley Council is asking park users what they value and what should improve across the borough’s parks, woodlands and open spaces, including those in Beckenham. The survey covers priorities such as maintenance and play areas and closes on Friday 4 September. Complete the parks survey.

Kanae Furomoto piano recital, 12.30-1pm. Pianist Kanae Furomoto gives a half-hour lunchtime recital at St George’s Church in Beckenham. See the recital listing.

Saturday 25 July

Connect Café and litter pick at St Paul’s Beckenham, 9.30-11.30am. St Paul’s Church opens its monthly café with coffee, bacon butties, toast, a book exchange and children’s activities. A one-hour litter pick leaves at 9.30am, with equipment and a bacon breakfast provided. Both are free and open to everyone. Connect at St Paul’s.

Orienteering in Beckenham Place Park, Registration from 10.30am. Choose a 2.2km beginners’ course, a 3.3km summer-series course or a 5.8km extension. Starts run from 11am to 12.30pm, with advance entry available while maps last. Late-entry surcharges apply. Enter and read the event instructions.

South London Jazz Orchestra at the Homestead, 3-5pm · free. The South London Jazz Orchestra plays a free Sunday afternoon set in the Homestead Cafe courtyard in Beckenham Place Park. Everyone is welcome. See the jazz orchestra listing.

Oak Grove Road, Croydon Road and Wickham Way: Oak Grove Road is scheduled to remain closed through Thursday 23 July, with two-way signals on Croydon Road until the same day. Multi-way signals are due to remain on Wickham Way through Friday 24 July.

Greenview Avenue, Ash Tree Way and Quernmore Road: Greenview Avenue is due to close on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 July. Ash Tree Way is scheduled to close from 8am to 5pm on Friday, when multi-way signals also begin on Quernmore Road for works continuing through Sunday 26 July.

Letchworth Drive, Bourdon Road and Hayes Road: Letchworth Drive is scheduled to remain closed through Monday 27 July and Bourdon Road through Monday 17 August. A further closure is due to begin on Hayes Road on Monday 27 July, continuing until Monday 31 August.

Hayes Lane and Cameron Road: Multi-way signals remain on Hayes Lane for gas works through Friday 31 July. Thames Water plans further multi-way signals on Cameron Road from Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 July.

Ravensbourne Avenue and Kangley Bridge Road: Multi-way signals on Ravensbourne Avenue and two-way signals on Kangley Bridge Road are both scheduled to continue through Sunday 2 August for Thames Water works.

Two detached homes proposed on Kelsey Lane: A new application proposes one detached home and one self-build detached home at The Dingle in Beckenham, with associated access, parking and landscaping. The council received application 26/02882/FPA on Thursday 16 July. View the planning application.
